As we all look back on lessons learned from last year's economic downturn, I'd ask that we don't wait to learn at least onelesson the hard way. If Washington truly wants to stimulate economic growth within the U.S., politicians should think carefully about continued efforts to limit reproductive options. Efforts including broadening the definition of human life (such as those on the ballot in South Dakota, Colorado and California one year ago), legislative efforts to restrict donor compensation and other restrictions on reproductive rights could have a significant impact on a billion-dollar contributor to the U.S. economy -- the infertility industry. It's hard to miss recent articles about the impact the next President will have on abortion, specifically the Roe v. Wade decision. But most of these discussions miss broader concerns around reproductive rights -- concerns that face a rapidly-growing number of Americans. Bad news for the economy can be good news for the baby business. Some Chicago area fertility clinics say they've seen a surge in women inquiring about becoming egg donors or surrogates for infertile couples, apparently because of the recent economic downturn. Summer is usually a slow period for donors, but "we have really noticed an increase in calls and inquiries and applications since about April," said Nancy Block, founder of the Center for Egg Options in Northbrook. .
