It's a truly historic day in our country - and during Pride Week, no less! We were thrilled to learn that the Supreme Court of the United States has today deemed Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. DOMA, the 1996 law that denied federal benefits including Social Security benefits, immigration rights, and family leave to gay couples who are legally married in their states, was officially struck down as writing inequality into federal law and as a violation of the protection of equal liberty.
We're thrilled for this victory of the Fifth Amendment and for the millions of families who deserve its protection. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, in part:
"DOMA humiliates tens of thousands of children now being raised by same-sex couples. The law in question makes it even more difficult for the children to understand the integrity and closeness of their own family and its concord with other families in their community and in their daily lives."
Family Equality Council, an organization dedicated to supporting the rights of same-sex families, is celebrating Pride Season with a fantastic campaign called Show the Love. Families around the country are showing the pride and love that exists there through photos like these:
The images remind us of the incredible families we’ve helped build through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. We hope that, as equal rights finally begin to get their recognition under the law, these family building options become more accessible. It’s a long-fought, well-deserved victory for this country’s unique, beautiful families. Here’s to paving the way to equality for all!
